Azz, però ce ne sono diversi bocciati o quanto meno rimandati...

Alla fine forse gli unici che boccia veramente sono 2, ovvero "L'uomo che sapeva troppo" e "Complotto di famiglia", sugli altri che stanno nel guado, tipo "Nodo alla gola" e "La finestra sul cortile", ammette una severità eccessiva perchè sapeva cosa poteva essere fatto aspirando ad un progetto completo, particolare un passaggio in cui dice "this may be a beautiful presentation, but my eye is probably the wrong one to be viewing it" e anche "I believe that most people will love the look of Rear Window on Blu-ray" (per i non anglofoni, Harris ammette di essere forse la persona sbagliata nel giudicare certi film vista la conoscenza clinica che ha di queste pellicole e ammette che probabimente la maggior parte di chi vedrà La finestra sul cortile amerà questa uscita). La parte su cui si lamenta in particolare è che per le dissolvenze hanno usato le stampe ottiche e non hanno ricreato le dissolvenze dai negativi originali (ricordiamo che l'uso delle dissolvenze dalle stampe ottiche e non ricostruite dai negativi va detto che è quello che succede nella quasi totalità dei bluray).
Quindi forse i due bocciati veramente sono "solo" L'uomo che sapeva troppo (che dice avere una risoluzione stupenda ma una palette cromatica sbagliata) e Complotto di famiglia (che soprannomina ironicamente "The pixelated special edition", motivo per cui gli affibbia lo 0,75 - si gli ha alzato il voto da 0 a 0,75 ;-) )

Vero, ma su sta roba come ha già ricordato Pyoung, ci ha messo le mani lui. Vertigo lo vidi proiettato al Nikeloedon di Genova in una stampa 70mm ricavata dal negativo originale dopo il restauro.

...Alpy figurati,questo lo sò e lungi da me sminuire il Pensiero del Grande Harris, che per me (e credo non solo) è un Punto di Riferimento Molto Importante nel "decifrare" , molto spesso , altrettanti Importanti Trasferimenti.
Ed è anzi una Vera Fortuna leggere le sue Opinioni , che lui stesso Gentilmente Condivide con noi Comuni Mortali e non lo dico per essere Sarcastico, poichè lo penso davvero.

Naturalmente il tutto basato sulle sue Enormi conoscenze in questo ambito, tenedo conto appunto che lui stesso in passato si è occupato dei restauri di queste Pellicole, quindi senza alcun dubbio , nessuno più di lui ha la capacità e la Facoltà di essere estremamente critico, nei confronti di questi trasferimenti.
...Ed ancora: "I Miei pensieri su questi titoli sono rivolti, a volte, più verso il concetto di protezione e salvaguardia dell'Opera per il Futuro"...E questo pensiero credo che si possa allargare a praticamente Tutte le sue Recensioni e o Votazioni dei Rispettivi Blu Ray da lui Visionati e recensiti, "Atto Di Forza" compreso.
...E conclude dicendo: "Che Questa sarà una Release molto Quotata ed Estremamente Valutata."In modo Positivo S'intende.
...Concludendo anche io è normale che poi chi come Te , ha avuto la fortuna e L'Onore di assistere ad una Proiezione di una stampa in 70mm ricavata dal negativo originale dopo il restauro, ha ed avrà (come Harris) un Enorme Vantaggio nella valutazione dei Trasferimenti in BD di queste Opere, non a caso, quando sarà, personalmente parlando , penderò Letteralmente dai Tuoi Scritti inerenti hai Tuoi Giudizi su questi Trasferimenti

E però proprio le parti quotate del pensiero di Harris sono molto significative, perché se dà un voto scarso per una scarsa fedeltà alla pellicola e per la differenza di queste edizioni rispetto ad resa top per il formato...boh, vedremo

Io alla luce di questi commenti autorevoli non me la sento di spendere 130 euro per poi appurare che si tratta di trasferimenti molto perfettibili, almeno per parte dei titoli compresi nel cofanetto...

I'm currently in the path of Hurricane Sandy and the weather is taking its toll on this review. Specifically, I'm having trouble uploading screenshots and completing individual reviews of the titles available in The Masterpiece Collection due to erratic outages in my area. Nevertheless, I wanted to provide all the information and impressions I've put together thus far. I'll be posting a detailed analysis of each film's 1080p/VC-1 or AVC-encoded video presentation as the week progresses, as well as at least twenty screenshots for each title:

Disc 1: Saboteur - 4.5/5

Notes: Saboteur's presentation is one of the best of the bunch. Excellent contrast, deep black levels, strong detail, very few issues or blemishes, no offensive image processing, and very little worth complaining about.

Disc 2: Shadow of a Doubt - 4/5

Notes: Another well-executed encode, and almost as impressive as Saboteur. The film is a touch softer, but chalk that one up to the original photography. Otherwise the biggest problem, if you can even call it that, is that a bit more print damage slips through. Even so, Shadow of a Doubt has never looked better.

Disc 3: Rope - 3.5/5

Notes: One of my favorite Hitchcock films; one of the set's more hit-or-miss presentations. Detail is terrific; colors, which tend to be a touch muddy, not so much. It doesn't help that print and brightness fluctuations are apparent throughout, or that, every now and then, strange red halos haunt otherwise clean edges. Still, I was pleasantly surprised more often than I was disappointed. This one almost earned higher marks.

Disc 4: Rear Window - 3.5/5

Notes: The first of Hitchcock's crown jewels (in this collection anyway) has what may just be one of the more divisive presentations in the set. The upgrade is obvious and appreciated, but color inconsistencies, fleshtone saturation and a few too many mishaps threaten to bring it down. Thankfully, much of the film has been granted new life and to solid results. Watch for this one to receive both higher and lower scores than mine.

Disc 5: The Trouble with Harry - 4.5/5

Notes: Aside from ever-so-brief ghosting in the opening minutes of the film (all attributable to the source, not the encode), The Trouble with Harry doesn't have any trouble at all. Colors are gorgeous, contrast is vibrant, detail is revealing, blemishes and artifacts are few and very far between, and this one emerges as one of the finest in the collection.

Disc 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much - 3/5

Notes: It's not digital manipulation and edge enhancement that nearly bring The Man down, although both are in play to some degree. (Some instances of ringing are so severe that it casts a glow around an object or actor.) No, the chief culprit here is color balance and saturation, which are all over the place. Murky skintones, botched primaries and crushed blacks. Be that as it may, there's still just enough to enjoy to salvage this one. For now anyway.

Disc 7: Vertigo - 4.5/5

Notes: Vertigo looks fantastic. Low lighting causes problems in a handful of scenes, sure. But this is the kind of rebirth every film in every classics or masterpiece collection should be granted. Color, detail, depth, grain structure, print integrity, encode proficiency... this one almost earned a perfect score from me. This one is first on my list to revisit once I switch off review mode.

Disc 8: North by Northwest - 4.5/5 * ""Da noi gia Uscito"" ""E NON sará Presente nel nostro Box""

Notes: Casey Broadwater writes, "The video presentation is uniformly excellent—as close to a definitive version of the film as we're going to get in 1080p." Follow the North by Northwest link to read his full review.

Disc 9: Psycho - 4/5 ** ""Da noi gia Uscito"" ""Sará Presente nel nostro Box""

Notes: Jeffrey Kauffman writes, "While Psycho showers its way onto Blu-ray with an at times startlingly clear and well defined image, there are unfortunately some persistent artifacting issues to report." He goes on to praise the presentation for the most part, but be sure to follow the link to read his complete impressions.

Disc 10: The Birds - 3/5

Notes: This is a tough one all around. Special effects sequences, of which there are many, don't look all that good, and high definition only exacerbates the inherent issues and anomalies of the bird attack scenes. I've never had much of a problem shrugging off such things, though. A restoration can't turn water into wine after all. It can, however, avoid some of the more egregious mistakes and quick fixes that make a nuisance of themselves here. The end result? With as many striking shots as unsightly shots, The Birds is chaotic and unpredictable.

Disc 11: Marnie - 2.5/5

Notes: Ooph. Where to start? Marnie's presentation isn't uneven, it's unwieldy. Some shots and scenes are amazing. Others are terribly soft and diffuse but rightfully so, as it's true to the original photography. Still other shots -- which are unfortunately in abundance -- are a mess. Unnatural grain, manic grain, erratic grain, faux grain. And then there are the color disparities, the print and encoding blemishes, the seemingly unrestored shots that stick out like a sore thumb. This one's barely passable.



Disc 12: Torn Curtain - 4/5

Notes: In the middle of the set's more problematic presentations comes Torn Curtain. The movie might not be the greatest, but the transfer delivers. There are some small issues, all easily overlooked, and nothing in the way of the debilitating nonsense that's yet to come. Colors and contrast are dialed in nicely, detail and grain are commendable, and noise reduction and other techniques are used judiciously and sparingly. An unexpected surprise.

Disc 13: Topaz - 3.5/5

Notes: Topaz fares pretty well. Digital manipulation is a tad problematic, but fine detail prevails on the whole, leading to a decently resolved image. Closeups are particularly satisfying, mild halos or no, and colors are warm, contrast is pleasing, black levels are deep and there aren't any major encoding issues to report.

Disc 14: Frenzy - 2/5

Notes: Frenzy hasn't been scrubbed, it's been strangled. Its original opening credits have been restored (after complaints began to circulate overseas about an altered credits sequence that had been foolishly tacked on to the film), but the rest of the presentation is in just as dire a need of a proper overhaul. Smearing, loss of detail, waxy faces, edge halos... Frenzy looks better than it ever has before, but only marginally so.

Disc 15: Family Plot - 1/5

Notes: Family Plot's god awful presentation almost has to be seen to be believed, it's that bad. It's much harder, in fact, to find something positive about the transfer than to simply point to everything, one scene at a time, and ask questions like, "What happened? What is that? Is this a DVD? What kind of noise was that? What am I looking at?" The unequivocal low point of the Masterpiece Collection.

Jasse-james, l'entusiasmo e la passione per il cinema d'autore che traspaiono dai tuoi post credo seriamente che quì dentro non abbiano eguali!
Non prenderò questo cofanettone purtroppo. C'è parecchia discontinuità nei trasferimenti, soprattutto per titoli così attesi ed importanti.
Mi ero ripromesso che avrei preso Vertigo se l'edizione fosse stata all'altezza qual'ora i film fossero usciti in edizione separate, per cui vedremo. Diciamo che condivido il pensiero di Daniel24 in questo senso.

Certo, la proiezione di Vertigo la vidi molto tempo fa. Tuttavia la ricordo abbastanza bene, anche perchè non sono molti i film che ho visto in 70mm: Vertigo, 2001 Odissea nello spazio e Spartacus. Purtroppo mi persi Lawrence D'Arabia. Vidi solo le valige con dentro le varie parti che componevano il film (non mi ricordo quante, ma erano parecchie) e mi raccontarono che anzichè a Genova, finì non so dove negli States per un errore e quindi il film arrivò in ritardo.

L'immagine di Vertigo era in "pillarbox" con due sottili bande nere ai lati del fotogramma, in quanto il formato del 70mm come ben sapete è 2.20:1, mentre Vertigo è 1,85:1.
Certo, la risoluzione del 70mm non è raggiungibile dal BD, forse se ne riparlerà col 4K.
Posso solo dire che da quei pochi captures visti in rete, quest'ultimo non sembrerebbe male, anzi. Potrebbe corrispondere ad una buona riduzione in 35mm, che non è poco. Ma dovrei vederlo in proiezione per farmi un idea.
La colorimetria mi sembra abbastanza fedele e la grana, piuttosto fine, se è ben gestita anche dal "vero", mi torna diciamo.

Sicuramente la maggior parte di voi già lo sa, ma lo dico lo stesso: nella scena della "libreria" il calo di luminosità di pochi secondi è voluto e c'era ovviamente anche nella stampa vista al cinema.

...In Europa, noi compresi ovviamente , il Box conterrà 14 titoli, Psycho compreso, che da noi gia é uscito, Intrigo Internazionale No.
...In America il Box ne conterrà invece 15 di dischi e quello in piu é appunto Intrigo Internazionale, che anche da noi gia é uscito .
...Io ho riportato tutte le recensioni da bluray.com , semplicemente per completezza, pensavo si sapesse che il Box USA aveva un disco in piu

...Mi Dispiace davvero molto (e non poco...) , che tu non prenda il Box, poiché mi sarebbe piaciuto analizzare insieme i Trasferimenti, soprattutto per Vertigo,a cui tengo davvero Molto e che io personalmente reputo il piu Grande e Autentico Capolavoro del Maestro.
...E vero , dalla tua Ottima analisi sulle reminiscenze di quella che deve essere stata una Indimenticabile Visione e chiaro che il BD Universal, per quanto Molto Ben Fatto, non potrá raggiungere la resa di un folgorante 70 mm, peró come tu hai detto, ed io sono d'accordo , di un 35 mm di sicuro si.
...Comunque io questa "pazzia" la faccio, troppo grande é la voglia di gustarmi queste perle , al meglio (per adesso s'intende).
...Poi sono oramai giorni che mi studio gli screen e le rece in giro in rete e piu li guardo e piu secondo me nel Complesso, il Lavoro che é stato svolto, per la maggior parte dei titoli , va dal Molto Buono, All'Ottimo e conoscendomi rimpiangerei di non averlo preso.
...Comunque vedrai che sicuramente usciranno le singole Release, cosí che potrai scegliere di prendere Vertigo e magari insieme agli altri Titoli che hanno avuto un'Eccellente Trattamento, che poi se non vado errato (e ti capisco) è la tua linea di Pensiero.
