un pò di pareri sul marantz s2

Hello,
Although I have rarely posted up til now, I have been hanging out on these forums for years. In particular, I have been following this forum very closely for the last few months. I have appreciated the helpful insights and info you have shared.
By way of introduction, I have been a HT enthusiast for years (especially video). When I built a new house 3 -4 years ago, a dedicated HT was a main focus for me. I was fortunate to enlist the services of Integrated Control Concepts in Omaha Nebraska. I can't say enough about the quality of service and the intregrity of ICC and Dan Gosch (owner). My theater is about 18' X 26" with tiered setting (3 rows, 12 seats total), acoustically transparent front wall with a shadow boxed 16x9 106" wide screen. It is light controlled with extensive acoustical treatments. After personally going to CEDIA 4 years ago to review all the projector options, I purchased a Vidikron Vision One and paired it with a Faroudja DVP-5000. I had not intended to spend that much but after seeing that projector compared with all the options at that time, I couldn't be content with anything else. I also wanted a large screen so I needed to go 9" CRT to maximize the brightness. I have been very happy with my setup. It often required reconvergence, but I didn't mind that much. The brightness was less than optimal given my screen size, but I was content with it given the otherwise tremendous picture. My Vidikron died about 2 months ago. So, I have recently been shopping for a replacement (although I have never stopped reading and researching during this last 3 years).
I have not ruled out getting a comparable CRT replacement (e.g. CrystalView,...). However, I knew that the PQ gap had closed substantially between CRT and digital since my last purchase. I quickly concluded that I needed to go to CEDIA to see all the options in one place and to see what was forthcoming. However, I couldn't stand being without a projector. I determined to get a projector now since I figured I would probably see something at CEDIA that was about to come out (e.g. SXRD) and I would be waiting potentially several months. I figured I could turn around and sell this "temporary" replacement when I got my long term replacement or use it somewhere else in the house. After doing research (and since ICC is a Marantz dealer), I had ICC get me the Marantz S2.
I have now had the Marantz up for about 3 weeks. I will note that after having it about 2 weeks, it apparently blew the bulb. I will assume this was a fluke. Much to Marantz's and ICC's credit, I had a NEW PJ hanging in my theater within 4 days.
My impression of the DLS HD2's and this Marantz in particular? Thus far, I am very impressed. I only occasionally notice the pixel structure. I certainly notice the difference in blacks and shadow detail compared with my CRT. However, it is much better than I expected or had seen previously (I had only previously seen HD1's and LCD's). I difference is more acceptable than I expected. I was very concerned about the rainbow artifacts, the fatigue factor and headaches. I am prone to migraines and usually very sensitive to visual artifacts. I am please to say I have not had any major problems with any of these. I only see rainbows when I try very hard, moving my eyes back and forth rapidly. I only feel like I am getting a headache when I do what I just described, trying to see rainbows.I occasionally wonder about the fatigue factor but it is probably usually do to the fact that I am usually watching the projector late at night, when I am already very tired.
I was initially less satisfied with the HD material (DirectTV), but I am happier with it now that ICC calibrated the PJ and now that I hooked up the Sat. receiver via DVI from a Sony HD200.
I must say I am also very impressed with the built-in Faroudja deinterlacing/scaling. I have not yet hooked up my Faroudja DVP-5000 and I have only beem using the internal scaler. This is very impressive, given the price difference. BTW, I am intending to post my DVP-5000 for sale. I figure, even if I decide to use an outboard process with whatever PJ I end up with, by then I will be wanting one with DVI,..... I haven't sold much equipment online. I was intended to post here/videogon and probably on ebay. Any others suggestions or advice?
In summary, I have been very impressed by the Marantz. Based on this experience, I doubt that I will go with CRT again but I do intend to look at what is being shown at CEDIA and I havent' ruled out anything. I have also been please enough with the DLP that I feel no pressure to move quickly to a replacement, if I don't see something at CEDIA that is presently available, or soon to be. If I see something that I believe is a substantial step forward, I will go for it. Like the rest of you, I am very excited to see what CEDIA brings, especially as new announcements come out, such as sushi's recent post.
I welcome any comments, feedback or advice. Hopefully, I will be able to stop in at the AVSFORUM party Friday. Night. Thanks.

ancora........
geisemann,
Having been in this business for 31 years, selling and working on every CRT projector imaginable from the original Advent in 1974 through the latest 9" sets, AND having owned (and loved) 5 different CRT projectors in dedicated theaters, I knew we at Marantz had a huge task when developing the VP12.
Many of the "attributes" of the VP12 (and particularly the best absolute black level in an HD solid state PJ) are a result of my work with the device from day 1. My guess, because of your analogy, is that you have never once given the VP12 a serious look (which if you had, I would take as a personal insult, but now simply write off as plain ignorance). A more suitable analogy is maybe a Lamborghini to a BMW M5. No question which has the higher level of ultimate performance, when it isn't being worked on. However, that performance ALWAYS comes at a steep price. And I'm not talking dollars (although there is that too...).
Every time I fire up the 12, I smile. For two reasons. First the picture. Second, that I don't have to wait for 20 minutes BEFORE starting to converge the beast, because I have yet to see an analog PJ that can maintain convergence to the level of 1 pixel resolution, and I'm that picky. And I suppose I should throw in the fact that I don't have to blast the volume on everything I watch due to the small aircraft hanging over my head.
Is it perfect? Nope. But neither is CRT. And depending on your priority list, many find the imperfections of digital much more livable than those of CRT. And in the next few years, we WILL ABSOLUTELY beat the performance of the best that CRT has to offer.
In the meantime, try this with your beloved CRT: Project a circle test pattern and put a compass on it. Move that circle around and see if it changes size or shape. Project a crosshatch and put a straightedge on any of the lines. See, to an analog CRT lover, the lack of perfect geometry is unimportant, because they know it can never be achieved, so who cares? Because they have the best blacks. Or try this one. Take your light meter and measure the luminance on the 4 corners of the screen and then the center. The VP12 maintains 95% uniformity. Think the CRT does? Nope, but they have the best blacks. And 30,000:1? Not if you have a uniform gray scale. William Phelps (perhaps the best analog CRT guy out there) has measured pretty high numbers, but nowhere near 30000. And the blacks of CRT need to be raised a tiny bit from perfect blackness in order for gray scale to be uniform. Not much, but some.
So wake up and at least test the digital waters, because otherwise in a few years you will be out of business, and I hate to see that happen to anyone. Really.
