Toshiba: Erster HD-DVD-Player ab Sommer/Herbst 2006 in Deutschland

Toshiba plant die Markteinführung des ersten HD-DVD-Players in Deutschland für den Sommer/Herbst 2006. Dies gab das Unternehmen heute auf dem "IFA-PREVIEW" in München bekannt. Toshiba betrachtet die HD-DVD als überlegenes System für HDTV-Video, welches niedrige Herstellungskosten für die Datenträger bietet und insbesondere durch das "Twin Disk"-System einen nahtlosen Übergang von der DVD zur HD-DVD ermöglicht, da auf einer Disc sowohl eine normale DVD mit 8.54 GB als auch auf der anderen Seite bereits eine HD-DVD mit 30 GB Speicherkapazität untergebracht werden können. Über Erfolge einer Einigung mit Sony als maßgeblichen Entwickler der Blu-ray Disc über eine Einigung auf ein einheitliches Disc-Format für die Zukunft konnte Toshiba in München nicht berichten.

In den USA soll bereits im Herbst dieses Jahres ein erster HD-DVD-Player auf den amerikanischen Markt kommen. Ein Prototyp soll auf der Funkausstellung im September in Berlin gezeigt werden. Bei dem hier abgebildeten Modell handelt es sich um einen nicht funktionstüchtigen "Mock-up", der nicht mit dem für die USA geplanten HD-DVD-Player identisch ist. In den USA soll der erste HD-DVD-Player rund 1000 US-Dollar kosten und die HDTV-Formate 720p und 1080i via HDMI wiedergeben können. Das Gerät ist auch bereits mit einem Decoder für die neuen Audio-Formate Dolby Digital Plus und DTS HD 5.1 ausgestattet, die bei der HD-DVD zum Einsatz kommen und bislang noch von keinem AV-Receiver/Verstärker unterstützt werden. Ebenfalls vorhanden ist auch ein Firewire-Port sowie eine USB-Schnittstelle, die für Dienste wie z.B. die Wiedergabe von Photos genutzt werden soll.

Befürchtungen, bei der HD-DVD könne ein noch rigoroserer Regionalcode als bei der DVD zum Einsatz kommen wie z.B. eine Abfrage via Internet, weist Toshiba zurück. Zwar wird auch die HD-DVD wieder über ein Regionalcode-System verfügen, man geht aber davon aus, dass Import-Geräte aus den USA auch hierzulande amerikanische HD-DVDs werden abspielen können.

Der für den deutschen Markt 2006 geplante HD-DVD-Player wird bereits ein Gerät der zweiten Generation werden und nicht mit dem ersten amerikanischen HD-DVD-Player identisch sein. So könnte auch der Preis unter dem des US-Geräts liegen. Ab wann die ersten HD-DVDs in Deutschland auf den Markt kommen, war in München nicht zu hören. Toshiba geht derzeit davon aus, dass ähnlich wie bereits bei der DVD-Einführung die ersten HD-DVD-Player noch vor den ersten Film-Veröffentlichungen in dem neuen HDTV-Format in den Handel kommen.
