We try and make our review process as objective as possible at AVForums but obviously when it comes to evaluating certain aspects of a display’s performance there will always be a degree of subjectivity.
I didn’t actually review the PK990 or the C750 so I can’t make a direct comparison of either of those displays but I mention in my review that LG’s plasmas have suffered from poor blacks in the past and in my opinion LG has made definite improvements in this area of late (David makes a similar point in his review of the PK990). I also mention that the blacks aren’t as good as those on the Panasonic plasmas I’ve reviewed but having just tested the Samsung C7000 I can say categorically that the black levels on the PX990 are comparable to that display. I also refute the claim that the black levels are worse than most LCDs, I have tested a lot of LCD displays and with the exception of LG’s own LE8900 I have seen none whose black levels even approach the PX990.
At the risk of repeating myself, black level measurements are meaningless because errors will be introduced by the meter and unless you’re watching in a pitch black room the viewing environment itself will determine the black level of your display. If you don’t believe me just ask Joel Silver at ISF or the guys at THX. The on/off contrast ratios of most displays are also completely meaningless, especially when the manufacturer just turns the panel off to boost its ratio numbers. Samsung is a particularly bad offender when it comes to this ‘global dimming’ approach and I’m pleased that LG has resisted the urge to follow suit. The only measurement that is actuially of use is the ANSI contrast ratio and achieving an acceptable ratio on this test is actually part of the THX certification process.
As far as screen reflections go, I reviewed the LE8900 and there were definitely less reflections on the PX990, perhaps due to the TruBlack filter. I’ve already commented on image retention in a previous post but once again all plasmas suffer from image retention to some degree or another and I never found image retention to be a problem during normal viewing conditions; in fact there was more image retention on the C7000 that I’ve just finished testing.
As for the other issues that David raised in his review of the PK990, I address them directly in my review. The back door sharpening that he refers to was completely absent on the PX990 I tested and the film mode issues that he mentioned were also not present. In fact all the video processing issues that I raised in my review of the LE8900 had also been fixed which would suggest that the PX990 is more than just a PK990 with 3D added, there has obviously been some tweaking going on behind the scenes.
Ultimately reviews are only a guideline and as always my advice is that if you’re considering buying this display (or any other for that matter) you should demo it in person.
Ora sei tu che devi decidere se acquistare un prodotto che ti permette vedere tutto al meglio o solo segnali a 1080p alla perfezione a discapito degli interlacciati o a 50hz
