Discussione tecnica BD: restauri e trasferimenti da riferimento

E' nata una stella (A star is born)

Si tratta del primo film masterizzato interamente a 6k: dalla scansione, al restauro al mastering.

Anche se certi restauri partivano da scansioni a 8k il lavoro di restauro era sempre fatto a 4k. Questo invece è stato fatto INTERAMENTE a 6k.

Warner Brothers has revealed that they are currently restoring the 1954 classic 'A Star is Born' at 6K resolution, in hopes of soon releasing it as a Blu-ray disc. The film, which stars Judy Garland and James Mason, will be the first film to be completely mastered at 6K - from scanning to restoring to mastering - and is expected to take six months to complete.

Ned Price, VP Mastering, Warner Brothers Technical Operations commented, "6K is typically a costly proposition, so that's why we are testing the waters on 'A Star is Born'. As the size of data is more easily managed and the tools become more accessible, we will increase our resolution."

Famously reconstructed in the early eighties under the leadership of late film historian Ronald Haver, MPI has meticulously preserved and restored Haver's 176-minute version of A Star Is Born to its original luster, bringing back the brilliant, saturated colors and crisp picture. Using cutting edge digital restoration tools, MPI removed heavy chemical staining that affected several portions of the film and utilized an ultra-resolution recombine process to correct the heavily damaged sections. Without this painstaking preservation, the fragile negative stock in which the film was created would surely be near extinction.

"Our colleagues at MPI have not only done a phenomenal job in restoring the impeccable visual style of this great motion picture, but through their work, they have also ensured the survival of this cinematic treasure," said George Feltenstein, senior vice president, theatrical catalog marketing, Warner Home Video. "The unparalleled superiority of Blu-ray combined with one of the best musical dramas ever made, come together to create an unforgettable home entertainment experience that is now preserved for the ages."

Praticamente ogni film che distribuisce rappresenta la massima qualità di restauro/trasferimento che quel titolo può avere ;)

Peccato solo che i dischi siano Region A :(

Interessanti le note sul restauro:

ON THE ZHIVAGO RESTORATION: "It was done by many people. It was quite a collaborative effort. We worked quite a bit at Warner Brothers Motion Picture Imaging [MPI], and by working in-house we were able to do things like scan the camera negative in 8K resolution, whereas that would be rather beyond most people's price range for a film of this length [Zhivago is over three hours long]. This also allowed some research and development work when necessary, to tune up problems inherent in the negative. Every project of this sort is different. For Zhivago, the image was in relatively decent condition, minimal color fading, the problems we had stemmed from the fact that David Lean had wanted to shoot the film in 65 mm, and the studio didn't let him, and the concession made to him was that major markets, major cities would receive 65 mm blowups, directly from the camera negative. Since there wasn't decent intermediate, they wanted it to be as sharp as it could. But printing directly from the original camera negative, which has all the splices and everything on it, is a pretty heavy thing to put on such a piece. The splices cut loose, and inevitably they catch during the printing process, and tear the negative. Also, the perforations from the side had stretched, and then pulled. From the printing. So back in 2000 when we attempted to restore the film, ultimately we had to abandon that restoration, because we couldn't get a stable image from the camera negative.

For this restoration, we went back, working at the Warner MPI, we were able to do things like modifications of the scanner, take our time to stabilize the image, and work within perforations that were still secured, and then stablize the image after the fact. Scanning is costly, and with a film of this length it's costlier still. It's the data space as well, and the data management. Because when you scan, you usually scan to one server...and in our case we did a direct preservation output to film from that server, so we went from 8K directly to film."

PHILOSOPHY OF RESTORATION/PRESERVATION: "You can't do preservation without a fair amount of restoration. But I usually separate preservation from creating something for distribution purposes. Two very simple paths. First, you take the original materials, always the original sources, or closest to the originals you can get, and literally preserve them. Copy them, migrate them to a new piece of film. Film is currently our preservation element because it's a rather inexpensive medium. It's very dense, it can hold up...it's quite substantial. You can leave it up—not that we would—but you can leave it up on the shelf for seven years and come back to it and know it will be there. Data at the moment is not quite that reliable. So what I do is scan the camera negative of Doctor Zhivago and immediately output it to film, so you're oversampling out to film from 8K. Then we take the data and then we go downstream that for distribution. We start the dirt-fixing, we start doing the color correction. And at that point we work in film space. We complete our restoration in film space. And that restoration would be potentially for theatrical relese prints. And then we make another version for digital cinema. Which is a different color space. And then we make yet another version, which is for high-definition TV, and that's what's on the Blu-ray. Which is in yet a different color space."
 
Uhm... visto che questo trattamento è stato utilizzato per "Minority Report" e "Salvate il Soldato Ryan", entrambi di Spielberg, direi che la risposta al tuo quiz potrebbe essere "La Guerra dei Mondi"... ci ho preso?
(per la cronaca, è in uscita il prossimo mese in Germania e Spagna con traccia italiana, ancora sconosciuta ad oggi la data per il nostro paese)

Per la Guerra dei Mondi mi sto informando, perchè malgrado l'IMDB non riporti l'uso del DI (cosa "normale" per Spilberg) sembra che nel 2005 il film sia stato scansionato a 4k (lo stesso vale per Elektra e I fantastici 4).
Mentre quello su cui sono sicuro (e il lavoro è stato già fatto) è un altro, e si tratta del "Gladiatore" :cool:
 
ottimo per era mio padre, stavo giusto cercando info in merito, ma se lo metti in lista ne desumo nn ci siano dubbi sulla sua qualità
 
forrest gump nn ci starebbe bene in lista? (pellicola originale 35 mm, 2,35:1, panavision)

infatti a riguardo nn mi è riuscito trovare nulla...
cmq giusto per nn sbagliare, su questo thread vengono elencati i bd per cui il trasferimento dalla pellicola è stato il massimo della qualità possibile, oppure solo quelli il cui risultato finale è in modo assoluto eccelso?

perchè ad esempio per il primo caso si potrebbe inserire anche donnie darko immagino, dal cui blu-ray nn si poteva aspettarci di +, visto il master originale. Per il secondo caso donnie darko ovviamente è escluso
 
Il lavoro fatto sul master D5 è stato molto buono. Però non posso inserirlo in lista perchè non si tratta di una filiera completa. Nel senso che William ha si fatto un ottimo lavoro, ma su un master che gli è già arrivato bello e pronto. Non sappiamo come questo master (scan o più probabilmente un telecinema) sia stato realizzato ;)
 
Ma dai,non ho parole,Universal ne ha combinata un'altra delle sue utilizzando il nefasto DNR anche su un cult come Spartacus...:cry:
La rece di BluRay.com arriva a preferirgli il dvd SD Criterion in quanto piu' fedele alla resa voluta da Kubrick.Mi chiedo perche' questi allucinanti filtri non vengano aboliti una volta per tutte da qualsiasi trasferimento...:mad:
Aspettiamo a questo punto il BD Criterion che ci restituira' Spartacus allo splendore originale.
