Dopo i rumors di qualche settimana fa LG ufficializza la presentazione di un 55" OLED al CES2012, quasi certamente Samsung a breve replicherà presentanto il suo 55" con caratteristiche sulla carta superiori ma più costoso a causa della diversa tecnologia utilizzata.

Seoul, Korea (December 26, 2011) – LG Display [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, today announced that it has developed the world's largest 55-inch OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diodes) TV panel. The 55-inch panel is a significant step forward in the popularization of OLED TVs and demonstrates the effective application of AM OLED technology to larger panel sizes at a more cost efficient level.

"Our objective has always been to actively define and lead emerging display technology markets," said Dr. Sang Beom Han, CEO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. "Although OLED technology is seen as the future of TV display, the technology has been limited to smaller display sizes and by high costs, until now. LG Display's 55-inch OLED TV panel has overcome these barriers."

Superior Image Quality in an Ultra Thin Design
LG Display's 55" OLED TV panel produces remarkable image quality with no after image due to its high reaction velocity, as well as high contrast ratio of over 100,000:1 and wider color gamut than that produced by LCD panels.

OLED, a medium that controls pixels is a departure from LCD panels which utilize liquid crystals. The new technology allows light emitting diodes to self-generate light and features a reaction velocity to electric signals over 1000 times faster than liquid crystal.

The environmentally conscious will also appreciate LG Display's 55" OLED TV panel. While light sources in backlight units, like LCD panels, must always be kept on, the OLED panel allows diodes to be turned on or off which enables lower power consumption than conventional LCD panels.

With no need for a special light source, LG Display's 55" OLED TV panel is also able to utilize a simplified structure thinner than that of a pen (5mm), and lighter than LCD panels. The panel's minimalist structure also allows for the realization of unique design elements.

Advancing the Popularization of OLED TVs
Although industry watchers anticipate OLED as the future of TV display, to date, the technology has faced challenges due to limitations on the sizes of displays it can be applied to and a high level of investment required. LG Display has successfully addressed these issues with its 55" OLED TV panel.

The panel adopts an Oxide TFT technology for backplane which is different from a Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS) type generally used in existing small-sized OLED panels. The Oxide TFT type that LG Display utilizes is similar to the existing TFT process, with the simple difference lying in replacing Amorphous Silicon with Oxide. Moreover, the Oxide TFT type produces identical image quality to high performance of LTPS base panels at significantly reduced investment levels.

Additionally, LG Display uses White OLED (WOLED). WOLED vertically accumulates red, green, and blue diodes. With white color light emitting from the diode, it displays screen information through color layers below the TFT base panel, which leads to a lower error rate, higher productivity, and a clearer Ultra Definition screen via the benefits of small pixels. Further, it is possible to realize identical colors in diverse angles via color information displayed through a thin layer. Lower electricity consumption in web browsing environments for smart TVs is another key strength of WOLED.

There's an interesting report that both Samsung and LG have recently produced prototype 55" OLED TV panels. These panels will be unveiled in the FPD International 2011 exhibition in Japan next month.

According to the report, Samsung has produced the 55" panel in their 5.5-Gen line using Small Mask Scanning technology (SMS, which replaces Fine Metal Mask, or FMM). As was previously reported, LG is using white OLED with color filters to produce their large panels. Both companies are satisfied with the panels' quality, power consumption and lifetime.

According to reports both Samsung and LG Display plan to introduce 55" OLED TVs at CES 2012 (January 10).
According to the new reports, both companies want to introduce the products before the 2012 Olympics (which is a big event towards which many consumers buy a new TV) - which means we can expect those OLED TVs shipping at around July 2012.
LG Display is adopting a white-OLED with color filter design, which is less efficient than Samsung's true RGB OLED panel, but according to LG this will be easier to produce and ultimately cheaper for the consumer.

LG.......proprio la LG marchio che in tantissimi non avremmo degnato neanche di uno sguardo, ma con tante importanti novità tipo gli ultimi TV con un invidiabile 3D passivo ( ed economico ) ed ora l' OLED stà scompigliando un pò tutto e tutti.

speriamo che non si limitino alle promesse..comunque prima di fine 2013 non se ne parla di averlo a prezzi umani!

Fai anche dopo: ad oggi non so quanto sarei disposto a spendere cifre altissime su tv che non sono 4K (perché non credo proprio che i primi OLED andranno oltre il Full HD, a meno che non vogliano venderle ben oltre i 10.000€).

"L'attesa era tanta e non a caso LG ha pazientato fino all'ultimo prima di svelare l'oggetto nascosto da un telo nero: stiamo naturalmente parlando del TV OLED più grande al mondo, il primo dotato di una diagonale da 55 pollici, di cui si sapeva già molto (vedi news), ma che nessuno aveva ancora mai visto con i propri occhi. Basti dire che al momento della rimozione del telo, nella sala si è alzato un boato di approvazione unanime: contrasto clamoroso e un livello del nero impressionante.

Ci siamo avvicinati ulteriormente e possiamo confermare che la prima impressione ci sembra davvero ottima. Avremo modo di vederlo ancora meglio nei prossimi giorni e rimaniamo ancora in attesa di sapere quale sarà il prezzo di vendita. Per la disponibilità sappiamo invece che bisognerà ancora pazientare fino all'autunno...

Vedremo poi nel pomeriggio (ora di Las Vegas) la risposta di Samsung, anch'essa in procinto di presentare il suo primo TV OLED da 55 pollici.

Arriveranno a metà anno a circa 6900 euro ( negli scaffali intorno a 6000 ) non dimenticate che è un 55"

Secondo quando riporta la OLED Association, LG potrebbe annunciare il suo TV OLED 55EM9600 in maggio, in occasione del 65esimo festival di Cannes (dal 16 al 27 maggio), per poi lanciarlo sul mercato subito dopo.
Altra cosa interessante è il prezzo: la OLED Association sostiene infatti che il TV verrà venduto in Corea a 9 milioni di Won, poco meno di 6000 euro al cambio attuale. Non resta quindi che aspettare.
