Philips reveals details on new ClearLCD picture technology
Following is the press release from Philips on its new ClearLCD technology, designed to produce better clarity with motion and improved contrast. The technology will be appearing on two models initially: the 42in 42PF9731D due in July (with Ambilight Surround – more on this shortly), and the 42PF9831D (with Ambilight Full Surround) due in April. We can also say that we’ve now been shown the ClearLCD system in action, and at first glimpse, it certainly looks impressive…
"Philips is continuing its leadership in display innovation with its latest LCD panel technology, ClearLCD TV.
ClearLCD is a major advance in Philips’ commitment to achieving maximum picture quality in its LCD display products, providing consumers with a superior LCD viewing experience through a combination of backlight scanning, advanced motion sharpness and superb contrast in dark scenes. ClearLCD is based on Aptura™ technology, an innovative lighting technology created by Philips Lighting, and further demonstration of the company’s leadership in consumer electronics and lighting innovation.
Philips’ ClearLCD technology provides an advanced solution to the current LCD displays in the marketplace. The new displays provide consumers with advanced motion sharpness, improved darkness and contrasting for a clearer, more immersive viewing experience.
Advanced motion sharpness
The motion sharpness found in ClearLCD TV is achieved by utilizing Philips Aptura lighting technology to include not only more backlighting but also only where needed. By using the broad expertise of Philips Lighting, ClearLCD reduces the number of lamps and drivers within the display from 16 to eight, at the same time increasing the light output by 300 percent. Additionally, the display features high-output fluorescent lamps operating in scanning modes that cancel out the sample and hold-effect found in typical LCD displays. The increased intelligence and enhanced lighting ensure consumers will enjoy a sharp, clear viewing experience.
Improved darkness contrast and viewing angle
In addition to providing sharper, clearer images, ClearLCD TV improves the darkness contrast typically seen on an LCD display. Improved darkness contrast is created by utilizing the Deep Dynamic Dimming (D-3) technology. D-3 technology dims the Aptura backlight according to the appropriate brightness and stretches the video for better detail, creating an impressive darkness contrast. An additional benefit of Aptura backlight technology is the improved viewing angle, a common issue with many LCD displays. With ClearLCD TV, it is possible to view content on an LCD display from almost every corner of the room.
“ClearLCD demonstrates Philips’ commitment to leveraging its key innovative technologies and providing products to consumers that will enhance their lifestyle,” said Theo van Deursen, CEO, Philips Lighting. “Philips Lighting and CE have worked closely to improve the picture quality of LCD and expect that this breakthrough technology will be applied rapidly in several model sizes of Philips’ LCD TV portfolio. In the future, Philips Lighting will continue its commitment to the development and production of technologies to gain and maintain its leadership as a key component supplier to the TV and display industry.
