"Our large Preview Special - JVC DLA-HD1 past week enormous resonance released. Home cinema fans of the whole world contacted and for further information to this new projector of the superlative asked us. Motivated by this large feedback we also succeeded in arranging at short notice a second “DATE” with the HD1 in the house JVC.
Our thanks go at Mr. Gustav Emrich (JVC) and Mr. Jürgen Wilkin (JVC), which made this second Preview so at short notice possible by their energetic support.
With this second meeting it was possible for us to take the projector a little more exactly under the magnifying glass and accomplish also first measurements. Generally speaking conference room of the house expected us the HD1 in combination with a 4m broad canvas.
In this second Preview Special we present therefore the first “hard Facts” concerning. the new LCOS of reference projector from the house JVC:
Here we want to stress again expressly that all results published here itself on Pilot lot model refer and therefore only as provisional Reference points to regard are! A detailed test of the final standard set will follow for official introduction on the market!
2. First results of measurement
The Warterei, in this part of the Previews we present the first results of measurement and their meaning for the image representation to enough.
2.1 color extent (Know-how left here)
As measuring pole to the color extent was considered in the past twelve months clearly Sony VPL-VW100. The projector with its xenon lamp and its sun-similar spectrum to its color extent jumped over itself over the video standards, but straight this constituted a large part of the fascination in the color representation for many.
In the DLA-HD1 finds no xenon lamp use, which the purse thanks by clearly smaller running costs. Instead a 200W UHP lamp was blocked, how it is usual for home cinema projectors. This lamp offers however no as balanced spectrum, as the expensive and aufwändige xenon variant. In order to be received however no deficits in the colors, JVC an unusual beginning selected:
Inside the projector are special filters, which let happen only selected spectral portions filter undesired spectral portions of the UHP light and. Particularly disturbing yellow portions from green are eliminated in such a way, which comes the color representation to property. In this way the projector loses light (without Farbanpassung the HD1 would be too far over 1000Lumen able), but is as a similar color extent as with xenon to be realized. And the thought out method was confirmed also in our measurements: The projector actually has an uncommonly large color area, which can take up it even with Sony the Ruby.
Left: Color extent DLA-HD1, right: Sony VPL-VW100 (Ruby)
In the comparison that the color extent precipitates similarly largely, only in the red offers above the xenon lamp still more clearance is to be recognized for strong colors. Are impressing this result, are nevertheless two completely different lamp techniques in the use. A comparison to Sony the VPL-VW50 (likewise UHP) makes the difference clear:
With the color extent the spirit separates: Video purists will criticize the fact that the required color area offers more, than the video standard plans and so possibly surfeited can work colors. Film fans however see straight in the reduced color area a disturbing compromise to the cinema original, which likewise exhibits a substantially larger color area. Regardless of these controversies the current film picture shows however that the special filtering of the light does not make possible a responding and also exaggerated “poppige” film representation for the HD1.
2.2 color temperature (Know-how left here)
Interesting always is factory-installed measuring of the color temperature: Here many projectors show clear weaknesses, which can be usually corrected however fortunately with the help of the picture menu. In the Preisklasse of a DLA-HD1 we set however higher yardsticks, here expect we a gewissenafte measuring of the color temperature already ex factory. Our expectations were fulfilled thereby, the measuring sensor certified to the projector a outstanding alignment on the D65-Videonorm, without by us had to be readjusted.
Color temperature on D65 calibrates conscientious
Under 30IRE we could not measure with this Preview unfortunately reliably, since with the display width of 4m only with difficulty constant measured values were to be reached. In addition, no large deviations from the optimum are to be expected there to.
The “Low” - Setting shows a conscientious white alignment to the video standard. During the presentation last week was insured us that the series in the attitude will correspond to this Preproduction model. This is very promising.
2.3 Schwarzwert, contrast, brightness (Know-how left here)
And now we come to the most exciting part of this test. Like already gives the manufacturer JVC admits a native contrast of 15000 with the DLA-HD1:1 on, without aids such as z.B. an adaptive iris screen. This value is so high that it is to be believed only with difficulty. Besides also the maximum brightness is not to suffer, with 700 lumens is suitable the HD1 also for large picture diagonals by this contrast optimization.
Our first view test suggested actually a sayful high contrast, because the HD1 struck in directly the comparison Sony the VW50 both in Schwarzwert and maximum brightness in the current film picture. But control is better and better: This time we had the opportunity to measure contrast and brightness with sensors. Actually reaches the HD1 15000:1 with 700 lumens and he also actually reaches this with correct colors (D65)?
We make it short, the answer to both questions read “”!! First we determined the contrast in the perfect Low mode (D65), presented above. In addition we held the sensor into direct proximity to the optics, in order to receive despite the outstanding Schwarzwertes reliable results of measurement. And our result certifies JVC a honesty with the data, as one finds it only rare in the home cinema industry: 15200:1 reached the projector, on the point exactly “as promised”. With the brightness also the agreement of manufacturer indicating and our results of measurement astonishes: 695Lumen reached the HD1 after 50Betriebsstunden in the High mode with D65!
But thus not enough: In the presentation seminar we experienced last week that the projector achieves its maximum luminous efficiency not with D65, but between 7000K and 8000°K. We activated and already these with our test by the appropriate Farbtemperaturpreset (“High”) by eye were a clear brightness gain to be registered. The measurements proved this mode with a brightness of 830 lumens. Also the contrast was in this mode with 18000:1 still more highly, than the factory specification.
It is to be taken into account JVC highly that the official brightness and contrast data refer to the necessary color temperature of 6500K/D65 and not to any practice-far attitudes. Nevertheless: If once much light achievement under not optimal conditions is used (z.B. TV in not completely darkened areas), then offers the projector still to contingency reserves, without the picture appears dramatically verfremdet.
Measured brightness & contrast

“Normal” 600 715
Lumen/lamp mode:
“High” 695 830

The structure did not permit it to measure light achievement and contrast as a function of the zoom shot factor. However us it was technically described that D-ILA projectors do not exhibit like the HD1 considerable fluctuations in contrast and brightness with different distances.
In things contrast holds the projector, which its manufacturers promise. Above contrast results in combination with as good luminous efficiency are at present singularly in the home cinema range, at least without aids as adaptive Lichtblenden or lamp modulation.
2.4 sharpness/convergence (Know-how left here)
Likewise much discussed are sharpness and above all convergence of projectors. As already describes in the first chapter, certain convergence shifts are always unavoidable with a 3-Chip projector. They should hold themselves however within a not disturbing framework.
With our test equipment this framework was kept over the entire image plane. Showed up only a minimum shift of red, which was not to be constituted however from small viewing distances.
Outstanding convergence with
Preproduction Sample
It remains being waiting whether the convergence in the series will fail just as well, but by the digitally possible convergence shift a good convergence can be always ensured in the picture center. We were very positively surprised also here. Same applies to the image definition, which likewise precipitates over the entire picture evenly well.
2.5 Shading
The aspect of the Color Uniformity is likewise fast discussed: The projector does not know disturbing color clouds up, neither in white nor in gray tones. Only at the lowest edge a completely subtle blue glow was to be constituted, which remained invisible however in the film picture.
2.6 picture impression
We have our subjektven picture impression in ours first Preview Special already describes. No other projector in such a way combined so far such a plastic picture with an absolutely natural image definition and outstanding colors, like the HD1. In addition the absence of disturbing artifacts comes, then are z.B. Rush, to color reduction, to rainbow effect etc. all “foreign words” for the DLA-HD1
With a flowing grey process it becomes clear that that
HD1 of no brightness jumps provokes
In the context of our test we came besides into the benefit of being allowed to admire still more Filmmaterial with the HD1. “Shakespeare in Love” brillierte with fine color nuances and a picture depth, as one does not get her also in the cinema to face. The Schwarzwert was so good thereby that even the type character boxing tires over and under the Cinemascopebild did not disturb. Landscape photographs Jaguar of a Werbetrailers worked so naturally and plastic, as if would participate one. And with very impressing highly soluble photographies the HD1 proved finally that it is more than suitable also as High ending “still-picture projector”.
3. Result
Also after our second meeting we remain thereby: The JVC DLA-HD1 is one of the most impressing home cinema projectors, which is met ever us. The first instrumentation results show with the fact that all manufacturer promises are kept, even exceeded. We want to emphasize this honesty on the part of the manufacturer here again expressly and request all competitors to take itself at the respectable data an example. Here the customer experiences exactly, what he has to expect with a correctly adjusted projector, and not any "marketing values".
Of course we could not answer all open questions in this Preview Special yet. But the results make desire on more and in the next weeks we a complete test in used detailedness will present.
For us is certain: After the introduction on the market the JVC HD-DLA1 will become a firm component of our HDTV Testraumes. The equipment leaves open after present state of the art as well as no desires and we to be able only each prospective customer recommend to make itself as fast as possible its own picture from this new contrast miracle to - you will not be disappointed!
