He's back. A hero for our millennium. And not a moment too soon, because during the five years (much longer in movie-fan years!) Superman sought his home planet, things changed on his adopted planet. Nations moved on without him. Lois Lane now has a son, a fiance and a Pulitzer for "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman." And Lex Luthor has a plan that will destroy millions - no, billions - of lives. Filmmaker Bryan Singer (X-Men) gives the world the Superman it needs, honoring the legend everyone loves while taking it in a powerful new direction. Brandon Routh proves a perfect choice to wear the hero's cape, leading a top cast that includes Kate Bosworth as Lois and Kevin Spacey as Lex. And the thrills - from a sky-grapple with a tumbling jumbo jet to a continent-convulsing showdown - redefine Wow. "I'm always around," Superman tells Lois. You'll be glad he is.

If Richard Donner's 1978 feature film Superman: The Movie made us believe a man could fly, Bryan Singer's 2006 follow-up, Superman Returns, lets us remember that a superhero movie can make our spirits soar. Superman (played by newcomer Brandon Routh) comes back to Earth after a futile five-year search for his destroyed home planet of Krypton. As alter ego Clark Kent, he's eager to return to his job at the Daily Planet and to see Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). Lois, however, has moved on: she now has a fiancé (James Marsden), a son (Tristan Leabu), and a Pulitzer Prize for her article entitled "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman." On top of this emotional curveball, his old archrival Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) is plotting the biggest land grab in history.

Singer, who made a strong impression among comic-book fans for his work on the X-Men franchise and directed Spacey in The Usual Suspects, brings both a fresh eye and a sense of respect to the world's oldest superhero. He borrows John Williams's great theme music and Marlon Brando's voice as Jor-El, and the story (penned by Singer's X-Men collaborators Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris) is a sort-of-sequel to the first two films in the franchise (choosing to ignore that the third and fourth movies ever happened). The humorous and romantic elements give the movie a heart, Singer's art-deco Metropolis is often breathtaking, and the special effects are elegant and spectacular, particularly an early airplane-disaster set-piece. Of the cast, Routh is excellent as the dual Superman/Clark, Spacey is both droll and vicious as Luthor, and Parker Posey gets the best lines as Luthor's moll Kitty. But at 23, Bosworth seems too young for the five-years-past-grizzled Lois. It's nice to see Noel Neill, Jack Larson (both from the classic Adventures of Superman TV series), and Eva Marie-Saint on the screen as well. Superman Returns is one of those projects that was in development for seemingly forever, but it was worth the wait -- it's the most enjoyable superhero movie since Spider-Man 2 and The Incredibles. --David Horiuchi

Thank you Amazon!!
A year ago or so, I brought the Superman Collection from Walmart.com. But I was heartbroken to find out that the copy they gave me of Superman Returns was defective!! Every time I played the disc it would skip the scene when Superman encounters Lex Luthor and then malfunction after that. (And I tried it on every Blu-Ray player in my house!) I figured Amazon would give me a better quality item, so I searched for Superman Returns on this website. I got it and I played it on my PS4. It plays perfectly, and I couldn’t be happier! There is a main menu on the disc, however, like most WB Blu-Rays, it will play the movie first with a pop-up menu available at your disposal. The pop-up menu shows “Languages”, “Scene Selections” and “Special Features”. Thankfully, there are not a over thirty Warning messages about Piracy when you finish watching the film like with other Warner Bros Blu-Rays. There is a ton of Bonus Features, which I cannot wait to dive into, I love this movie, it’s on my top list of Superman films. Along with the Christopher Reeve films. Also, since this is Warner Bros, you can convert this Blu-Ray with Vudu-Disc to Digital. And it is available with Movies Anywhere. I cannot thank Amazon enough for this. It comes with a code that could be used to get a free New 52 DC comic, and that’s a bonus. I want to get a Superman/Wonder Woman comic. Now I can enjoy this movie whenever I want.

The primary reason I found myself revisiting Superman Returns (this time on Bluray), is because of the 2013 release of the Man of Steel. I've just finished watching SR twice, and it's much clearer to me what the newly released MoS is missing: humanized characters that we can relate to. Additionally, SR comes with the same powerful, moving score that has inspired millions since its 1978 release, thanks to the genius of John Williams.

From the emotionally compelling opening scene with the space shuttle, to the ever-so-short clip of Superman pulling the submerged half of a large yacht out of the Atlantic Ocean, SR is a welcome enjoyment of triumph and goodness that makes me smile each time I sit down and watch it. None of the events of MoS were as momentous or as memorable as SR successfully delivered to us. Sure I had my issues with it when it first came out. Illegitimate children and that silly green rock aside, I wanted more punch. After having seen Man of Steel, I know now what too much of a good thing is, the latter half of MoS being nothing more than an alternate 3rd Matrix ending with a Transformers/Independence Day flare. The ending of SR is still a bit hollow, but it's nothing compared to the overall travesty of MoS. From MoS's shaky camera footage, jittery zooms, under-written characters, gratuitous CGI numbing violence, Hans Zimmer's turgid, over-produced score, and a general lack of any moment of true heroism - SR successfully trumps MoS with simple, yet powerful elegance. My personal take - the warmth, joy and enthusiasm that SR delivers is the Superman I directly relate with, although I may be in the minority. "Why the world doesn't need Superman," the article SR Lois Lane wrote during Kal-El's absence seems fitting for the 2013 Man of Steel, because the Superman I love forgot to show up, and the masses enjoyed it.

Superman Returns, in my opinion, is the best Superman Movie to date, followed closely by the 1978 original with Christopher Reeve. Bryan Singer did a terrific job capturing the presence and personality of both Clark and Superman, that gives him the human touch we lost in MoS. Over 100 years of movie making standards that defined the mechanisms for making memorably impressionable films were dismissed in the 2013 Blockbuster, leaving it cold and heartless with zero fun. Thanks to owning Superman Returns, I can reclaim what was recently lost and still hold on to the true spirit of Superman - a hero we can look to rise above the trials and struggles of disjointed humanity... to eventually triumphantly join him in the sun.

    "Spoilers ahead, Beware"
The movie is set after the events of donner's Superman II. Superman left the planet Earth for five years hoping to find another kryptonian like him. This movie point out another take on what it is like to be Superman and in this film, to be Superman is to be lonely.
Lois Lane moved on and have a son and she wrote an article about why the world doesn't need Superman.
Meanwhile, Lex Luthor gets out of prison and finds the way to obtain one of the cristals in order to learn about Superman and take advantage of the Krypotonian technology to hurt him and make a whole new continent.
It is true that the movie isn't loaded of action scenes, The plane sequence being the best imo, but it is still a really enjoyable ride.
Brandon Routh is Great as superman. The kid works aswell. Unlike any other superheroe movies involving kids with powers, which most are just plain annoying, this one is quite the opposite. Lois lane does a fine job aswell, but a more mature actress would have being better. Kevin's as Lex Luthor is very good aswell. I enjoyed this Lex better than Gene's one.
One of my favorite parts nearly the End when Superman is hurt and falls from the sky,...Everyone tries to save him, His mother, Martha Kent, willing to see his son but afraid she might reveal his identity, Superman is Alone no matter what, which leads to understand a little why he needs to watch over lois (which was critized as stalking) but I don't see it that way. But when he learned the truth about his son growing on earth while he was looking for someone like him around the universe, his own blood was right here, for all these years.
I think it is a Great Return, Brian Singer took some risk, mainly with the kid but it worked. Definetly a must own in your DVD collection mainly if you are a fan of the man of steel.
Now that The sequel is confirmed, let's all hope Singer will bring a great villain and more action. The kid should remain very secondary in my opinion.
I'm only disapointing thing is the quality of the transfer of the Movie on DVD. Grainy in some points, If only it could have being an EpIII or Lord of rings quality , it would have enchanced the experience. The Sound is Great, Mainly in the airPlane sequence. The Extra are great too, from finding The man of steal, the design of the costume,...

This movie is not just a surface level exploitation of classic Superman movies, it actually picks up on themes started in the Richard Donner films and takes them in new and interesting places. Save for some poor implementation of 2007 CGI, particularly in CLOSE UP flying shots (rolling my eyes), this movie is also technically well made.

This movie is actually quite ahead of it’s time in many respects, too. It brought back a previously dead franchise, it groomed a new character to take the main character’s legacy in future movies (albeit the same gender/ethnicity as the character he was replacing), it ignored the bad sequels and attempted to start fresh from the point of the series that was still considered successful, it used classic John Williams music, and most shockingly, I think this may have been the first movie to use CGI to revive a dead/aging actor (Disney eat your heart out). I swear Superman Returns and Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, despite both being unsuccessful, are seemingly the blueprint all old franchises are following now

Regardless, this is a decent Blu Ray release for an underrated movie in an oversaturated genre

5.0 out of 5 stars Le meilleur film sur superman
Reviewed in France on November 21, 2019

5.0 out of 5 stars Ewige Nörgler!
Reviewed in Germany on January 22, 2008

    Also was erwartet ihr mehr???
