- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 April 2012My interest in cinema and film began about a year ago. I decided I'd methodically work my way through many of the "classics" of modern film - the films of Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg, Tarantino, Leone and many more: but sincerely, and I mean this - none of them had more of an effect on me than Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter. This is, in my opinion of course, the greatest Vietnam War film, hands down. Now that's a bold statement, I know. I'm probably incorrect when I actually think about it - just because it's my favorite, that doesn't mean it's the best, does it?
The Deer Hunter tells the story of three Russian - American steelworkers, Michael, Nick, and Steven. Michael (Robert De Niro) is a quiet, thoughtful and a very loyal friend to both Nick (Christopher Walken) - a chrismatic, loving man and Steve, (John Savage) the more sensitive one. Their wider circle of friends contains Axl (Chuck Aspergren) Stan (John Cazale) and John (George Dzunda). They are all hardworking blue collar men who labor in the steel mills of the town. The film opens with the men leaving work in the morning to prepare for Steven's wedding, which is taking place that day. The men are also planning one last deer hunting trip before Michael, Nick and Steven leave for their imminent voluntary service in the Vietnam conflict.
This is one of the most brilliantly created pieces of work I have ever seen. Quentin Tarantino described The Deer Hunter as an epic in every sense - in aim, in length, in intention and in emotion. The film is comprised of three main acts over three hours, and not one second of it is wasted. There is no scene, no moment and no piece of dialogue from the masterpiece that is the screenplay that is not needed or superfluous. The dialogue and language in this movie is pure gold, and the cinematography is breathtaking. To any fans of John Cazale, it was also his last feature film, before his death from cancer in March 1978.
Michael Cimino's reputation was permanently tarnished by the incredible finacial failure of his following picture, Heaven's Gate (1980). However Cimino's The Deer Hunter remains a masterpiece in the truest sense of the word, earning five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken, who is phenomenal is this film, and in the opinion of some, actually outshines Robert De Niro.
I do not wish to give the film away as I would have absolutely hated it had someone done that to me. Be prepared for a breath taking journey of friendship, love, tragedy and the cruelty of war. The only thing I was am disappointed by is that I could never have seen this film in the cinema.
The Deer Hunter is an unforgettable experience.
I don't wish to give the story awa

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2011Whenever I come aross a list of So-Called Classics You Can't Sit Through, The Deer Hunter usually figures in there somewhere. Having revisited it on odd occasions through the years, and now on Blu-ray, I think it's one that's best viewed once you're past the 'blockbuster' phase.
As you become interested in cinema as an art form, there comes a pivotal moment (usually during The Further Adventures of Optimus Prime or suchlike) when you realise that the extended ILM showreel you're watching is quite soulless. You begin seeking decent characterisation and a truthful experience. This is what The Deer Hunter offers.
The film is a powerful drama that concerns a group of Pennsylvania steel-workers and what happens to three of them when they serve in Vietnam. It's directed by Michael Cimino, this being his brief period as Hollywood's next big thing before his self-indulgent Heaven's Gate nearly bankrupted United Artists and therefore his career.
I was first aware of it when it occupied my local picture house for what seemed an age. There was obviously something in it that kept audiences coming. I wasn't old enough and so had to wait for a television showing, and can remember how bored I was that it didn't 'cut to the chase' quickly enough. By the time that most stories had left the first act far behind, I was enduring a 40-minute wedding sequence. I just couldn't see the point of it. Bring on Vietnam.
Now, however, I appreciate the boldness of Cimino's vision: the more time spent establishing the dramatis personae, the greater the emotional investment - and the bigger the return on it as you witness what becomes of them. The Vietnam section is a masterful study of how brutality sends the soul down different paths: Robert De Niro's level-headed de facto leader, John Savage's nervous wreck and - most mesmerising of all - Christopher Walken's Oscar-winning descent from naivety to deadly addiction.
This collector's Blu-ray (2009 edition) comes with a booklet and a historical documentary in addition to the extras from the 2-disc DVD release. Although at first glance it looks as though there are no subtitles, the menu is rather poorly designed. You have to select your language first and then several subtitle options become visible. You shouldn't have any quibbles about the presentation: the picture and sound are first-rate.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 September 2012One of the greatest ever. If not the greatest. For me, no doubt a top 1 or 2 film of all time.
So naturally I was interested what a blu-ray edition would do for me. What new things would I see? Would it be a revolution or a marginal shift? Would any of these things be positive?
Well, as it goes I'm underwhelmed by the new experience. Blu-ray, as a rule, has made each and every film I've seen better - more engaging, more...everything - but this is different.
The effort Michael Cimino put into the feeling, the resonance of the environment the characters live and work in, the desolate shots of industrial grind, the warmth of a short joyride to the pub are all killed by the upscale imagery.
35mm was perfect, this is less so.
I've had to get used to a fancy hi-def TV - everything looks like it's a film set, not a scene. Much too real - so features which once contributed to the imagery now distract and detract from it.
The wedding scenes were such rich, overwhelming two-dimensional artworks that they quite consumed me but switching to the detail and stark 'realness' of blu-ray kills it.
I still love the film, but next time I'll go back to the original.4 stars because it's The Deer Hunter, minus 1 for blu-ray.
It's not broken.
